O-rings silicone or nitrile rubber

#1

Is there a reason to get silicone o-rings as opposed to nitrile rubber which seems to be much cheaper

Thanks

Silicon O-rings are soft and tend to tear or rip easily. If you have an application where you have a removable interface I would suggest not using Silicon. Buna-N o-rings might be a better choice -as they are better at abrasion resistance. I prefer Viton O-rings for most applications. If you would like to compare the different compound properties check out the Parker Hannifin O-ring design guide. Go to page 2-9 for: Comparison of Properties of Commonly Used Elastomers. click here . From here you will be able to make a better decision based on your unique application.
