How does the board manage reverse direction?

Hello, everyone,
This may be a silly question but I was wondering how, is the reverse direction of motors managed?
Is it just that the esc is capable of going one way or another depending on the entry signal?
Or is it more complicated? Thank you for the help.

The Arduino sends a PWM signal to the ESC. The ESC will cause the motors to rotate forwards when the signal is above the center frequency and reverse below that center frequency. When the signal is at the center frequency the motors will remain stationary. The ESC’s need to be programmed to access this mode. They usually only run forwards with the default ESC programming.
