Conversion to Autonomous Vehicle and/or AUV


My name is Nicolas Xiong, I’m a senior in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston. My senior design group and I are working on changing one of the OpenROV 2.8 kits to an AUV.

Has anyone here had any experience doing so? We’re essentially trying to reprogram the kit to patrol a small area.


How is the UAV going to know where it is in the patrol area?
GPS signals cannot penetrate water very well unless you plan to have the UAV tow around a GPS equipped buoy?
The ArduSub Developers have been experimenting with guiding their ROVs with GPS, but then you would have to use a GUI (QGroundControl) that is different from the Cockpit.
