Battery selection and other questions

Hello, I’m in Scotland and looking to build an rov from the open rov 2.8 Dev kit for my uni project this year.

I’m looking at batteries and wondering what kind of voltage and current to go for with short dives…
I’m using bildge pumps instead of motors due to shipping and tax costs, so would this affect how much I need to run and will I also need any esc?

@neil.souter,
I use 9.6 v 4500 mah NiMH batteries in my Blue Robotics/OpenROV 2.8 Hybrid that uses three BR T100 Thrusters. Besides providing power to the ROV they also provide ballast.

Do you need any kind of voltage regulation? Or does the rov only draw what it needs?

@neil.souter,
There are onboard +5 vdc and +3.3 vdc regulators on the OROV 2.8 Controller Board while the brushless motors are supplied battery voltage. A 9.6 vdc NiMH battery will charge up to around 10.8 vdc, but under load will drop closer to 9.6 vdc.
